Brown spots, Melasma, and any type of hyperpigmentation can occur in any skin type. Often, they are the result of age, sun exposure, or hormones, but can occur after acne or redness of the skin. Medications that lighten brown spots can cause redness, dryness or irritation if used in large amounts or used too much. Start by using these medications every other night. If irritation doesn't appear after 1-2 weeks of use, then use every night. Sun avoidance and sun protection are essential. If a sunscreen is not used with broad spectrum SPF 50+, the brown spots may not improve. Apply sunscreen every two hours and wear a hat if you are in the sun.

Some tips when using these powerful hyperpigmentation medications

  • Avoid eyes and lips when applying medication (using a petrolatum-based product like vaseline, Aquaphor, or CeraVe healing ointment on lips prior is advised)
  • If dryness or irritation is experienced, reduce frequency to every other day, reduce quantity to half a pump, and/or, buffer medication by mixing into moisturizer
  • If a dose of medication must be skipped, complete the same skincare regimen, excluding the medication. DO NOT “double-up” days or mix medications
  • Do not mix these medications with any additional toners, acids, exfoliants, serums, or retinols. If you have any questions about the safety of any product or practice, please reach out to our customer service team at orders@dermtodoor.com or text our skin success team at 703-215-3087

How to Prevent Melasma & Hyperpigmentation

In addition to your hyperpigmentation prescription and skincare routine, Here are some Dermatologist tips for preventing the appearance or darkening of pigmentation. Remember: the more wholistic your approach to treating your hyperpigmentation, melasma, and dark spots, the better your results will be!

  • Wear a TINTED, SPF 50+ sunscreen everyday, reapplying every 2 hours.
  • Maintain this intensive sunscreen regimen rain or shine, indoors or out: UVA rays pass through clouds and windows while High Intensity Visible Light and Blue Light emanate from technology screens, and they both DARKEN pigment
  • Wear sunglasses and a wide visor or hat when in the sun, avoid peak sun hours midday and early afternoon
  • Consuming blueberries daily has some anecdotal correlation with melasma reduction
  • Minimize inflammation overall to prevent worsening melasma by minimizing cleansing, wiping, pulling, or scrubbing the skin in any way with products, towels, or makeup wipes
