  1. About Your Rosacea

  5. Rosacea Triggers

Rosacea is a skin condition that begins in your 20s and 30s and starts with sensitive skin. It can progress to persistent redness, flushing, bumps and acne-like lesions and skin inflammation. Prevention is key, and using products developed for sensitive skin is necessary. While genetics often determine predisposition to rosacea, environmental factors can trigger rosacea flare-ups. Here, we outline how to use your Derm to Door prescription for rosacea as well as Dr. Lily's recommended products for red, sensitive skin.

Some tips when using these powerful rosacea medications

  • Avoid eyes and lips when applying medication (using a petrolatum-based product like vaseline, Aquaphor, or CeraVe healing ointment on lips prior is advised)
  • If dryness or irritation is experienced, reduce frequency to every other day, reduce quantity to half a pump, and/or, buffer medication by mixing into moisturizer
  • If a dose of medication must be skipped, complete the same skincare regimen, excluding the medication. DO NOT “double-up” days or mix medications
  • Do not mix these medications with any additional toners, acids, exfoliants, serums, or retinols. If you have any questions about the safety of any product or practice, please reach out to our customer service team at orders@dermtodoor.com or text our skin success team at 703-215-3087

Common Rosacea Triggers

In addition to your rosacea prescription and skincare routine, here are some triggers to avoid to keep your rosacea at bay. Remember: the more wholistic your approach to rosacea treatment, the better your results will be!

  • Excess heat in the form of hot drinks and spicy foods
  • Gut health disruptors like dairy products and gluten for those who are sensitive
  • Red wine and other alcoholic beverages
  • Unprotected sunlight and wind exposure
  • Exercise, physical exertion, or overly hot showers
  • Topical fragrances or fragrant essential oils
  • Drugs that dilate blood vessels, including some blood pressure medications
